In 1967, Kenneth Schnitzer, then President of Century Properties, Inc., acquired 50 acres between Buffalo Speedway and Edloe Street from The Lumbermens Company. This tract has since become identified as Phase I of Greenway Plaza.
Greenway Plaza’s security officers are available to provide security escorts for customers and guests entering or leaving the business complex. The service is available 24-hours a day, seven days-a-week.
In November, 1975, Summit Sports and Entertainment Arena (later named Compaq Center), celebrated its Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting with a “Heart to Heart” benefit. The event was attended by several celebrities including Kirk Douglas, Andy Williams, Ed McMahon, Dyan Cannon, Debbie Reynolds, and Roger Miller. Beneficiaries of the “Heart to Heart” event included Baylor College of Medicine, Methodist Hospital and Texas Heart Institute.
Most buildings within the Greenway Plaza campus are interconnected by environmentally-controlled bridges, and/or tunnels and covered walkways.
Greenway Plaza is Houston’s first totally planned business-commercial-residential complex.
Greenway Plaza’s first customer appreciation party, The Greenway Get-Away, was held on September 11, 1997, and was attended by approximately 900 customers. The third annual customer appreciation party, just two years later, hosted over 3,000 guests.
The Greenway Plaza development is comprised of 4.3 million square feet of space, including 10 office buildings, the Houston City Club tennis, dining and athletic facility, the Renaissance Hotel, and The Shops at Greenway retail mall and food court.
The Renaissance Houston Hotel, with 388 guest rooms, two full-service restaurants and a lobby bar, has been a part of Greenway Plaza since 1975. The hotel also offers 24-hour room service, conference rooms for private business meetings, and a ballroom with capacity to seat 550 guests.
Greenway Plaza’s Central Plant provides hot and chilled water to all buildings within the Greenway Plaza campus, including office buildings, Renaissance Houston Hotel, and the Greenway I and II condominium towers.
Before they were named 4, 9, and 11 Greenway Plaza -- 4 Greenway Plaza was known as the Sonat Building, 9 Greenway Plaza was known as Coastal Tower, and 11 Greenway Plaza was known as Summit Tower.
Over 13,000 parking spaces are provided “on campus” for the convenience of Greenway Plaza customers.
