  • Antone's

    Iconic is a word thrown around with increasing regularity, but to call Antone’s “iconic” manages to be an understatement. Let’s start with its longevity: for five decades, the brand has been a Houston staple — and many of the po’ boys that made Antone’s a household name are still on the menu and continue to be value priced.

    Classics like The Piggy, featuring a completely masterful blend of ham-salami-provolone-pepperjack arranged on a bun from Royal Bakery, are still available for under $7. Upgrade that to its boxed lunch version (featuring chips and a cookie, naturally) and you suddenly get a flash of why Antone’s has served the same community for more than 50 years.

    Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 am until 3 pm.

  • Fusion Eats

    It’s the rarest of culinary phenomena: food that tastes like it should be a splurge, but’s actually good for you. And luckily for Greenway Plaza, Fusion Eats pulls it off like no one else.

    Started as one of Houston’s first gourmet food trucks, the demand for their made to-order tacos grew so enormous that the only solution was to go brick-and-mortar. See and taste what the buzz is about for yourself with delectable, globally-inspired taco options that span Chinese barbecue pork to chicken tiki masala, or a plate piled high with nachos.

    An expansive patio overlooking the central green along with killer cocktails add to the festive vibe. Located on the ground floor of 9 Greenway Plaza;

  • The Rice Box

    It’s a toss-up on what’s actually the first thing you’ll notice about The Rice Box: is it that savory smell flirting with your nostrils? Or is it how distinctly cool this classic Chinese eatery is? All your favorite takeout items make an appearance on the menu, but take a chance on cool as they come upgrades like an entire selection of street food bites.

    Popcorn chicken, salt-pepper tofu and fried chicken dumplings guarantee you’ll be fighting off “just a tiny bite” fork attacks from friends all day long.

    The husband and wife duo, who act as co-owners and pit masters, bring unexpected twists to Texas’ signature fare, serving up fall-off-the-bone meats like brisket, pork ribs and chicken along with signature sides like elote, kale salad and Moroccan-spiced carrots. Though the meat takes center stage, there’s much to be said for the lengthy dessert menu. Have you ever had PB&J chocolate cake before? Go right now and just remember there’s no running in The Hub.

    Adding to the appeal is a curated menu of fresh snack and entrée items ranging from sweet and savory biscuits and kolaches to steel cut oatmeal and signature strawberry fields salad, in addition to offerings tied to preferred culinary partners like 44 Farms, Morningstar Doughnuts and Blacksmith.

    Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 am until 3 pm.

  • Burger Chan

    Burger-Chan’s signature item is a “cute” burger: two delightfully smashed 44 Farms patties piled with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onion and cheddar cheese, and smothered with house-made thousand island sauce. It’s still a bit of a mystery exactly where the cute factor comes from, but one thing is crystal clear: the burger is so good, it can call itself whatever it wants.

    Customization is huge at burger-chan, with a seemingly endless array of sizes and additions – exotics like scallion aioli and sambal mayo coexist alongside staples like barbecue sauce and guacamole – as well as between the bun options including chicken, veggies, fish and National Deli dogs. • Cilantro's

    Mexican food in and of itself is already pretty perfect. Who can go wrong with combinations of tortillas, cheese, grilled meat and spices? But here’s where Cilantro’s manages to do the impossible and improve on perfection — and by a considerable margin, too.

    Artfully spiced rice and refried beans of the perfect consistency make up the bed of whatever entree you pick to accompany them. And there’s really no wrong answer there. Grilled steak, chicken or shrimp lay alongside some freshly sliced avocado for their fan-favorite tacos. Massive fajita bowls packed with crisp vegetables are an ideal mid-day meal. But Cilantro’s breakfast tacos are the real stars: they’re arranged so well, Houston might just be primed to snatch San Antonio’s breakfast taco crown.
